Geocache Description:

09 March 2019, 10:00 - 13:00

Thanks to some great thinking the CITO week is no more, say hello instead to the CITO Season! so come and join us for a morning of uncovering long lost monument stones at the Yorkshire in Bloom Gold award winning York Cemetery and earn your first CITO season souvenir of the year at the same time. Without the efforts of volunteers, the cemetery could not operate as the award winning wildlife and visitor haven it is today.

York Cemetery is a working burial ground. At the same time, it provides opportunities for conservation, education, and informal recreation within a protected environment close to York city center. Volunteers contribute in many ways, helping to maintain and develop the wild and beautiful 24-acre site, rich in local history and ecology.

Our main task on the day will involve giving a large holly tree a long needed prune to raise it from the ground to a more managable height, while at the same time exposing some long hidden away monument stones underneath, we'll then free these of ground vegetation and give them a chance to shine in the sun once again, we'll also have the usual selection of brambles in the area to clear too!

At about 12noon we will stop for lunch. Bring a packed lunch and a flask. It might be an idea to bring a bottle of water and some suncream just in case the sun comes out.

You could also take the opportunity to grab the cemetery traditional, multi, puzzle and earth caches whilst you are here.

Important information, please read.

York Cemetery - The Jolly Holly Bash CITO

Saturday 9th March  2019 10:00am - 1:00pm

Firstly if you are planning to come then please log a 'will attend' note, mention how many will be in your group, this is extremely important for us to ensure the event and planning run smoothly

Meet us at the cemetery gatehouse (entrance on Cemetery Road), for introductions and a brief H&S chat. We will be the ones wearing bright orange. Come and introduce yourself as Geocachers if you've not been before, there will not be an event log book, but we will have a site attendance sheet for you to sign, this must be signed with your real world name and not caching name, this is an insurance requirement for the site, if you do not sign this then you may not be able to work on site, sorry, but we have to be quite strict about this.

We recommend you wear sturdy footwear, as we will be working on uneven ground between gravestones. You can bring your own gardening gloves, the thicker the better, but we have plenty on site if you don't own any of your own. All tools and safety equipment will be provided (safety goggles will be provided for those on tree trimming duties).

Children are welcome, but must be supervised. No dogs are allowed in the cemetery, apart from registered assistance dogs. Please remember that this is a working cemetery and there will probably be people visiting graves.

Our tasks on the day may change depending on the weather, we will update the listing and make announcements accordingly, please ensure you have logged a 'will attend' to receive these updates.
