Logan Shoals Vista Point
About this location:
Located on Hwy 50 North along the east shore of
Lake Tahoe. Elevation 6439 feet. Easy turn-out at the Logan Shoals
Vista Point area. Good parking alongside Hwy
50. At the parking area,
look for large information sign at the head of the vista
path.
Geocacher Bob (Rain734) sent some useful
historical information of the scientific studies of the clarity of
Lake Tahoe. Here it is:
"John
Le Conte, a UC Berkeley professor did the first in-depth study of
the lake clarity in 1884 when he measured an average clarity depth
of 103ft. No documented measurements were made until 1968
when the lake clarity was regularly measured. In that year, the
clarity depth was still excellent at 102 ft. Since then, it
has become more and more murky. The worst year was 1985 when
the clarity was only 69 ft. It improved and then gradually
decreased reaching 77 ft in 1996. The answer to this Virtual Cache
gives the latest data for tourist consumption, although I expect
some researcher has the latest 2004 data which is not shown on the
signs."
Thanks for the cache. Bob
Make sure you take the short walk out to the vista point where you
will get a great panorama of Lake Tahoe.
To verify you have found the
cache:
At the parking area, look for large information sign at the
head of the vista path.
To verify you have visited the cache, you may post a
picture on your log of you next to the sign, or you holding your
GPSr with the sign in it. Or, email me the depth of clarity of the
lake. The sign phrase is, "....Some places objects can be
seen__________below surface."
Cache adopted and updated in March 2008 by

The original owner of this cache is no longer an active player in
the game and was gracious enough to allow me to take over the
maintenance of this hide. I have adopted five vista area
Virtual Caches around the perimeter of Lake Tahoe and three in the
Carson Pass/Kirkwood area. Loving Lake Tahoe and other
adjacent areas as he did, the original creator,
TahoeBerne, chose these scenic areas to have you
stop, look, and breathe in the beauty. I wholeheartedly agree
with his opinion of these areas and his reasons for wanting to
share them with you.
Although a "hidden" cache may be more challenging to locate,
TahoeBerne had the following reasons for making
these Virtual Caches:
-
Many Traditional hidden caches are
stolen.
-
You can visit them in all four seasons, pending
any road closures due to snow, which are only temporary
anyway.
-
They are easier to find, if that is your
desire.
-
They all are located in what I feel are the most
scenic locations.
Virtual Caches in the
area that I
adopted from
TahoeBerne:
California Side of Tahoe
(Clockwise around lake)
Lakeview For You
The Kings Beach
Nevada Side of Tahoe
(Clockwise around lake)
Ponderosa Ranch Relic
Memorial Point Scenic
Overlook
Logan Shoals Vista
Not around the Lake
Caples Lake Resort
Kit Karson Kache
Snowshoe Thompson
There are plenty
of other Virtual Caches to visit along the way maintained by other
players.
