Markopoulo Train station
There used to run a train from Athens to Lavrio, at the end of the Attika region. One of the stops along the railroad to Lavrio was indeed at Markopoulo.
Markopoulo is located close to the airport, and its old railway station building has been well preserved, and the train is still parked there. The station is now a small city park with playground and mostly neglected. It is close to the four-lane, connecting the airport, the Athens motorway ring road system and Lavrio.
This railroad was primarily used for mine workers, because Lavrio is a mining area that once, during Roman times (and even before), was the biggest silver mining area in the world, producing up to a million tons of silver annually. It kept producing right up until the 1960's, when it was eventually shut down, because of environmental concerns. 3000 years of mining resulted in considerable soil and water pollution around Lavrio. The area is like a “Swiss cheese”, riddled with caves and mining tunnels and currently it is under archaeological controls.
