Vertighost: It has been brought to my attention that this cache is in need of owner maintenance. Unfortunately, the cache owner has passed away and there are no existing provisions for cache maintenance. These circumstances preclude any chance that the cache can be adopted. I am, therefore, archiving this geocache.

McALLEN, City of 48.6 Square Miles CACHE is at SE corner of N Taylor Road and W Pecan Blvd. intersection, in City of McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas. McAllen extends south to the Rio Grande and is named after John McAllen. This is the largest city in Hidalgo County. Since 1940 it's nickname has been The City of Palms. SETTLEMENT began here in 1904 and the area nearby was rural and agricultural. By 1911, 5,000 acres were under cultivation. In that same year the town applied for and was issued a charter of incorporation under the name of McAllen. From the 1950's McAllen saw steady growth that has continued in this metropolitan area. Colonias of different sizes and inhabited by mainly agricultural workers borders McAllen on all sides. POPULATION: 1910 150. 1920 5,331. 1960 32,728. 2000 106,414. 2010 129,877.
