Shearwater Wedgetail World Traditional Cache

This coastal grass area just a few hundred feet north on this trail is the home of the Shearwater Wedgetails of Hawaii,  where they make their nests in the ground in small caves.  These birds have been endangered by the introduction of foreign predators such as the mongoose, feral cats and dogs, who prey on the eggs and young, and who destroy nests by digging into them and exposing the nest further.  These birds can reach a wingspan of 38".  In the evenings they fly out to sea to feed on fish and return at dark.  Lights from shore can confuse them, so most lights are pointed down or shielded.  In olden times,  fishermen used to look for feeding birds to locate bigger fish that feed on smaller ones.  Shearwater nests from December 1st to April 1st.  At night during nesting they make eerie wailing sounds that sound like babies crying or spirits wailing.  There is plenty of parking.   Keep dogs leashed, obey the signs and PLEASE be aware of muggles when searching so others can enjoy finding this cache.
