Before the Year 1000
Before the year 1000, in the absence of historical documents, any constructive event is impossible to define. Foundations of Roman origin, found during the restorations of the years 1952/59, make it possible to assume the presence of an ancient pagan temple on the same site. According to tradition, in the place where Crema was built, there was a small church dedicated to Santa Maria della Mosa already in early Christian times .
The 11th Century Duomo
In the eleventh century there was a large church, the same size of the present one: we could see the ruins under the current building floor. In two documents of 1098 and 1143 it is called
Ecclesia Sancte Mariae and it had three aisles with pillars and three semicircular apses. It probably had the highest central nave with exposed trusses and side aisles with groin vaults. Below the bell tower there are ruins of a small altar, which base is 40 cm below the ancient cathedral floor; here are traces of a fresco with only the bottom parts of three figures realized by an archaic hand, perhaps more ancient than this Romanesque church.
You could see the above design in the Civic Museum of Crema, near which the Farinate GeoCaching Team hid another cache of ours

From 1185 to 1341
After the historic 1159-1160 siege, much of the cathedral was destroyed; but Barbarossa himself inaugurated its reconstruction on May 7, 1185; At that phase they focused on the absidia, the triumphal arch and the new sacristy. The fortified center in 1212 passed under the diocese of Cremona, which stopped all fund forms and the work was interrupted. When the diocese came back to Piacenza in 1284, the reconstruction began. The whole elevation of the new church lasted for 57 years, as there were several interruptions, due to the Guelphs and Ghibellines wars. Between the 12th and 13th centuries the bell tower was erected on the southern apse, and later it was also used as a watchtower, both under the brief Benzoni lordship and under the rule of the Republic of Venice.
