EDINBURG: City of 37.7 Square Miles YOU are looking for a cache on the NE corner of the W Owassa Road and S Jackson Road intersection in the CITY OF EDINBURG, Hidalgo County, Texas, The City of Edinburg is the county seat of Hidalgo County. It's first was the community of Hidalgo near the Rio Grande. Then the records were transported 17 miles north by oxcart to the small community that became the county seat, Chapin. It was soon changed to Edinburg (officially changed in 1911) to honor the businessman John Young who was born in EDINBURG, SCOTLAND. RANCHING was important those early years. Irrigation in 1915 changed it to an agricultural economy. The first railroad service was in 1909, an eight mile spur line. Later, highways and trucks replaced rail service. Edinburg was named the "Gateway City" to the Rio Grand Valley. It's first radio station began in 1947. The University of Texas-Pan American was founded in Edinburg in 1927. The former city hall was erected in 1909 and is the major historical landmark. And lots more! POPULATION: 1920 1,406. 1960: 18,706. 2000: 48,485. 2010: 77,100.
