Gush Halav (Hebrew for "block of milk") was the most important town in the Jewish upper Galilee. It was the administrative capital of the region from the days of the second temple until the messianic and Talmudic period. According to tradition, there was a walled city from the days of Yehoshua Bin Nun.
John of Gush Halav played an important role in the great rebellion against the Romans in 66 AD. After the destruction of the Second Temple, the continuity of the Jewish settlement was maintained until the 19th century. The area was known for its excellent olive oil. Today, the Arab village of GISH is built on the remains of the ancient town, with its synagogue and Jewish cemetery. Also there is the church of Boutrous.
