Ruscombe Pond –
World War II Wellington bomber crash site
In the early hours of 30th January 1943, a Wellington bomber crashed near Ruscombe pond whilst on a leaflet dropping operation. All five of the crew were killed. The aircraft was buried deep in the marshy bank and recovery of the bodies took some time. All of the wreckage was eventually removed. A plaque was placed in Ruscombe Chapel in 1993 in memory of the crew members that died.
