Geocache Description:

The Bullion Run Iron Furnace cache is located at the southern end of the Allegheny River Tract of Clear Creek State Forest. Located in Venango County, the Allegheny River Tract is sandwiched between State Game Lands number 39, and the western shore of the Allegheny River. This 3200 acre tract of land was purchased by the Commonwealth in the 1970’s with the intent of creating a new state park to be known as “Allegheny Gorge State Park”. Unfortunately (fortunately!), the funds never materialized, and this tract was added to the Clear Creek State Forest. According to the Bureau of Forestry, the Allegheny River Tract is intersected with 20.5 miles of trails.

The Allegheny River Tract is easily accessed from PA 8 north of Barkeyville. Exit at PA 308 (Bullion/Pearl) and turn northwest toward Pearl. Make a right on to “Old PA 8” for .4 miles. Turn right on to Dennison Run Road (T-368). You will stay on Dennison Run Road for 1.7 miles. You will then hang a right on to Dewoody Road (T-371). There is a parking lot (N041 16.143, W079 52.325) at the end of Dewoody Road located on State Game Lands #39. Park in this lot.

Trek south from the parking lot along a gated Game Commission access road. You are currently in State Game Lands #39 (remember to check the Game Commission web site for the rules governing access/use of Game Lands). Stay on the access road for .25 miles. There is a sign off to your left for Dennison Run/Bullion Run Iron Furnace Trails. Take this trail to the left, and into the woods. The trails are clearly marked with signs, and orange blazes. This trail will bisect State Game Lands #39. After about a mile you come to the boundary of the Game Lands, and the Allegheny River Tract. There is a forest management area right on the boundary. This area is penned off from deer, and gives you a pretty good look at how wild an area can grow if it has the ability. You can enter this area through the gate. Travel on to the main trail intersection. Dennison Run Trail breaks off to the left, the Lookout Trail goes straight ahead, and the Bullion Run Iron Furnace drops down over the hill to the right. If you have time, check out the four suspension bridges on Dennison Run Trail (not for the faint of heart). Also, the Lookout Trail will take you to a vista some 400 feet above the Allegheny River (an easier walk). From this point you are a little more than one mile from the Iron Furnace (and the cache). The elevation will drop 300-400 feet on your way. The cache is located above the trail 100 yards or so before you hang the left to the Iron Furnace. Check out the furnace which was built in 1840, and used to produce pig iron.

Good Luck!
