Geocache Description:

This is the ReDux of a cache that we didn't want to lose the history on!   Large cookie tin small coffee container that is a bit more camo'd but is still not meant to be hard to find.   It's kid friendly and a nice easy find for new cachers!  Changed it for a 4th time.... this is now a bit more challenging and no longer a fun, larger, swag cache anymore.   I've had to cammo it greatly and make it hopefully more difficult to find and destroy!

This is a "Point of Interest" along US Hwy 40 in western Moffat County about 6 miles east of Maybell.  It's a great place to stop and stretch your legs and get a bit of history!

From the Historical Sign

"The Johnson Homestead

Edwin C. Johnson served thirty four
continuous years in public service to
Colorado; Moffat and Routt County
Legislator, Lt. Governor, three times
Elected Governor and eighteen
years as a United States Senator.
In dedication
to all early homesteaders,
Ferne and Edwin Johnson
Erected this fence and preserved what
was left of the home they built in 1910. "

A bit more info:  Edwin Carl Johnson: Senator from Colorado; born in Scandia, Republic County, Kans., January 1, 1884; moved with his parents to a cattle ranch near Elsie, Nebr., in 1884; attended the rural schools; employed as railroad laborer, telegrapher, and train dispatcher 1901-1909; homesteaded on government land in Colorado in 1910. -- On November 8, 1932, Johnson was elected Governor of Colorado. He was reelected to a second term in 1934. During his tenure, he dealt with the difficulties that resulted from the Great Depression. He established his own reform agenda and reorganized statewide government. Included in his programs were a $20-million highway construction plan, a civil service reform policy, a tax reduction, and a balanced budget platform.   The Johnson Bore of the Eisenhower Johnson tunnel bears his name to this day.    He is also known for declaring Martial Law and closing the border of Colorado and New Mexico during the great depression to prevent more people from coming into the already depressed Colorado.
