Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846, the 29th state in the USA. It consists of 99 counties and has a population of 3.146 million people. Iowa is the only state whose east and west borders are formed entirely by rivers. The Mississippi River runs along the east and the Missouri River and Big Sioux River run along the west. Iowa is the 26th most extensive state in land area and the 30th most populous of the 50 states. The capital and largest city is Des Moines. Several famous people have called Iowa home, including a U.S. President, Vice President, two first ladies, five Nobel Prize winners and several writers, artists, musicians, actors and athletes.
