L’opera è scolpita in pietra arenaria.

The Basilica of Saint Anthony, known by the Paduan as the Saint, is one of the most important symbols of the city and one of the main places of Catholic worship. The church keeps inside the relics of St. Anthony of Padua and is visited by many pilgrims every year. In the Middle Ages, in this space was the church of Santa Maria Mater Domini where St. Anthony stayed. After his death on 13 June 1231 at the Arcella, the northern district of Padua, the body was moved to this church. The construction of the basilica began a year later, when Antonio was proclaimed a saint.
What is the connection between the basilica and geology? It is always interesting to note that in places like these, where many styles and artists have followed over the centuries, different types of rocks with their origins and characteristics meet in the same place to give life to one great work. In this way, limestone, sedimentary rocks, sandstone, marble and trachyte can be found together in harmony. This EartCache will give you information on some of these geological details and show you how nature and art can be combined to create wonderful works.
The floor
The floor of the basilica consists of sedimentary rocks. To the right of the main altar, in particular, it is possible to see some fossils inserted into the rock of the floor. These are ammonites from the Mesozoic era, from 220 to 65 million years ago. The ammonites were a group of mollusks with a spiral-shaped shell, now extinct. They are the fossils par excellence, given their great presence in marine sediments. They are also called guide fossils because they allow the dating of sedimentary rocks.
The deposition of Christ
On the back of the altar of the basilica there is a relief by Donatello: the deposition of Christ. This relief is the only one of the complex carved in limestone and not in bronze like the others. The figures have been darkened to harmonize better with the other bronze works. Limestone is a sedimentary rock, mainly of organic origin. The work was completed in 1453. The present one is a reproduction, the original was destroyed in the late sixteenth century.
Chapel of the tomb of Saint Anthony
The walls of the Chapel of the Ark, where the tomb of St. Anthony is placed, are decorated with 9 high-reliefs in Carrara marble. The best Venetian sculptors of the 16th century worked on these works. The tomb of the Saint was realized by Tiziano Aspetti in 1594. The reliefs represent moments of life and miracles of St. Anthony, like the resurrection of a young drowned woman or the miracle of the severed and reattached boy's foot. Marble is a metamorphic rock and originates from sedimentary rocks that undergo modifications caused by high temperatures and pressure. Marble is mainly made of calcium carbonate. The white Carrara marble is considered one of the finest in the world, has a white background and gray veins.
The virgin with the child
In the chapel of the Madonna Mora, what remains of the ancient church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, is a statue of Rinaldino de Puydarrieux of 1396. The work is carved in sandstone. The sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock in which the granules have been cemented over time thanks to finer debris that filled the empty spaces. The sandstones are easily workable, for this reason they are used for architectural and artistic elements. The statue also has some inserts in red Verona marble and trachyte from the Euganean Hills. The Verona red marble is mined in the Lessini mountains. This place about 130 million years was covered by sea. In the seabed, ammonites, shells and other sediments have been deposited which due to the presence of iron, manganese and clay between the different layers have given the marble the characteristic red color.
Gattamelata
The Gattamelata monument is a bronze work by Donatello, concluded in 1453, and represents the leader Erasmo da Narni. The work was born as a sepulcher for the general, now buried in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament inside the Basilica. The high pedestal is composed of trachyte. Trachyte is an effusive magmatic rock. It originates from large masses of magma that have undergone slow cooling processes. The trachyte of the Euganean Hills is particularly strong and sufficiently workable. Since Roman times it has been extracted for use in the construction of bridges, roads, architectural elements. In the Renaissance it has been widely used for paving streets and squares, sometimes even for sculptures like the lions of the Caffè Pedrocchi in Padua.
