Situated along side a once mighty river that is now only a trickle compared to its pre-power station involvement. The Waiau once drained all the catchment of Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri. Since the development and operation of the Manapouri Underground power station all the water from these two great lakes goes through the underground system and out in to Doubtful Sound. Just recently the control gates at Mararoa have stopped any water coming down the river and the flow going through Tuatapere is now only the water that runs into the catchment below these control gates.
The lagoons at Te Wae Wae were artificially created to help with breeding whitebait but now there is often insufficient water in the river for these to operate as they were intended.
The people of Tuatapere have recently developed a series of walking trails around the district which have been named after the town's nickname;Tui;They are all well worth walking on their own right. Both Windyglen geocaches in Tuatapere are to be found on Tui Trails
