The Bell Cemetery was established in 1909. The town itself was relatively new, a product of the Atlantic, Suwannee River and Gulf Railroad (and subsequent owners) trying to establish a rail link from the St. Johns River to the Suwannee River, with the Atlantic and Gulf destinations being reached by river boat. It never got further east than its original starting point at Starke, but it did eventually reach the Suwannee River at Wannee, where the pilings for the wharf can still be seen.
Other towns sprung up at intervals along the line, but most died after the railroad failed and was removed. Bell continues to be an active community, with the original railroad depot, a restaurant, auto parts store, school, and so on.
The cemetery is a quiet and peaceful place to listen to the birds, and seek out hidden treasures. The cache is NOT, however, inside the cemetery. Please be respectful while in the area.
