GeoTour Stop #04: Central Park and WWII Memorial

Central Park, so named because of its central location in Norfolk, was originally named People’s Park, and before that Homestead Grove. In 1906, William Warneke set out to name the park ‘People’s Park’ because its convenient location and the fact that there were no rivers or major roads that would be a danger to families with children. It featured a bandstand where concerts were held in the summer. Over the years, the park has grown to include tennis and basketball courts, a large playground area, picnic tables, barbeque grills, and, most recently, a WWII Memorial.

Near the posted coordinates, you will find a small replica of the Statue of Liberty. Find the plaques on the front. The top plaque contains a year. This year is ABCD. The bottom plaque contains the names of several people. Count the number of people. This number is E. Fill in below to find the final location:

N 42° 1.E(A+B-E)E W 97° 23.(A+C)(A+D)(B-A)

Item of interest: Take special note of the names on the bottom plaque as they have a direct historical connection to GeoTour Stop #07!
