Château Ducal: la Porte Saint-Pierre
Le château Ducal de Caen est un ensemble fortifié du centre-ville ancien de Caen. Fondé vers 1060 par Guillaume le Conquérant, duc de Normandie, il connait de nombreux aménagements au fil des siècles. Avec 5,5 hectares, c’est l’un des plus grands châteaux d’Europe.
Son enceinte contient aujourd’hui :
- les vestiges du donjon, non ouverts au public
- le logis du gouverneur (actuel musée de Normandie)
- le cavalier d'artillerie et les salles du Rempart (salles d'exposition du musée de Normandie)
- le musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen
- l’église Saint-Georges, centre d'accueil et d'interprétation
- la salle de l'Échiquier en référence à l'Echiquier de Normandie (salle d’exposition temporaire pour le musée de Normandie)
- le jardin des simples, reconstitution d'un jardin médicinal du Moyen Âge
La totalité des constructions et vestiges du château, à l'exclusion des fossés, du musée des Beaux-Arts et de l'aile en retour nord du musée de Normandie, fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 10 avril 1997.
L'accès principal au château se fait par la Porte Saint-Pierre:
Au sud des remparts, devait se situer une poterne qui est ensuite remplacée par une entrée plus importante, l'actuelle porte Saint-Pierre. Cette partie sud des remparts est détruite en même temps que le donjon par le décret du 6 août 1793. Elle est restaurée à partir de 1804 avec l'ajout d'un pont-levis et d'un sceau du Premier Empire au-dessus de la porte; ces derniers éléments ont disparu lors de la restauration du château après la Seconde guerre mondiale.
La barbacane de la porte Saint-Pierre est construite peu après la prise de la ville par les Anglais en 1435. Les travaux débutent en 1438 pour se terminer en 1445.

The Ducal castle of Caen is a set strengthened of the former city center of Caen. Based by 1060 by William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, he knows numerous arrangements in the course of the centuries. With 5,5 hectares, it is one of the biggest castles of Europe.
His surrounding wall contains today:
* The vestiges of the donjon, not open to the public
* The lodging house of the governor (current museum of Normandy)
* The rider of artillery and the rooms of the Rampart (showrooms of the museum of Normandy)
* The museum of the Fine arts of Caen
* The church Saint-Georges, reception center and of interpretation
* The room of the Chessboard in reference to the Chessboard of Normandy (temporary showroom for the museum of Normandy)
* The garden of the simple, the reconstruction of a medicinal garden of the Middle Ages
All of the constructions and the vestiges of the castle, with the exception of ditches, of museum of the Fine arts and the wing in return the North of the museum of Normandy, made the object of a classification in conformance with historic monuments since April 10th, 1997.
The main access to the castle is made by the Gate Saint-Peter:
To the south of the ramparts was to be a postern which was then replaced by a larger entrance, the present Gate Saint-Peter. This southern part of the ramparts is destroyed at the same time as the keep by decree of August 6, 1793. It was restored from 1804 with the addition of a drawbridge and a seal of the First Empire above the door;these last elements disappeared during the restoration of the castle after the Second World War.
The barbacane of the Saint-Pierre gate was built shortly after the capture of the city by the English in 1435. The work began in 1438 and ended in 1445.
