About the Cache
• This is a somewhat easy geocache that does not require a lot of hiking. I made the terrain rating a little higher because I encountered mud and some prickly plants on the way in. Long pants and boots are recommended. Hunting is permitted on this public land. Please wear blaze orange and check local hunting seasons. Hunting is not permitted on Sundays.
• Maryland DNR does not allow parking in front of the gate at the end of Liverpool Road. It is important to keep service roads free of obstructions in case of an emergency. Please use the designated parking area. I have included a waypoint to the appropriate parking area.
• Consider bringing a trash bag and gloves. Removing a bag of trash helps to restore the beauty of our natural resources and preserves public access for future generations.
History of Liverpool Point
• Per the Maryland Historical Trust, George Washington owned a 600 acre farm in this area which he received as payment for debt in 1775. A nearby historical marker states that Washington accompanied General Smallwood at this location in 1786. Additional information can be found here: https://mht.maryland.gov/secure/medusa/PDF/Charles/CH-188.pdf The historic marker can be found here: https://mht.maryland.gov/historicalmarkers/Details.aspx?id=RM-266&recNum=11&keyword=Washington&county=Charles%20County
• According to Frederick Tilp in his book “This Was Potomac River,” Liverpool Point received its name because a Liverpool, England merchants’ wharf was established in this area in 1741. This wharf remained active until 1948. Beginning in 1888, Liverpool Point was the location of the Monroe fishery which harvested sturgeon for caviar which was in high demand by wealthy people in Philadelphia and New York. This caviar factory ceased operations in 1926. Relics of this history can be seen in the Potomac River at this location.
