Geocache Description:

Questa castella è documentata fin da prima dell’anno 1000 ed è stato luogo conteso tra Lucca e Firenze. Il nome potrebbe derivare dall’antica famiglia fiorentina dei Medici.
L’antica pieve dei Santi Sisto e Martino domina il borgo.
Il campanile è probabilmente un’antica torre di guardia. All’interno della chiesa vi è il fonte battesimale a forma di sarcofago del 1545 e una preziosa statua lignea della Madonna col Bambino, realizzata nel tardo 15° secolo.
Lungo le strette strade del paese è facile vedere le caratteristiche aie pensili, ossia ampie terrazze sopraelevate dove venivano fatti essiccare i prodotti agricoli.
La cache si trova in prossimità dell’antica porta castellana, l’unica rimasta integra e ottimamente restaurata nel 1900.

There is evidence of this Castella even before the year 1.000 and during the centuries it was disputed between Lucca and Florence.
The name Medicina could be after the famous Florentine Medici family.
The old church of Saints Sisto and Martino overlooks the hamlet. The bell tower is probably an ancient watchtower. Inside the church there is the baptismal font in the shape of a sarcophagus of 1545 and a precious wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, built in the late 15th century.
Along the narrow streets you can see the typical hanging famyards, which are large terraces where agricultural products were put to dry.
The cache is near the ancient entrance door, which is the only one still preserved and restored in 1900.
