Haßfurt ist die Kreisstadt des Landkreises Bayern im bayerischen Regierungsbezirk Unterfranken. Sie liegt am Nordufer des Mains (bei Flusskilometer 355) sowie am Südwestrand des Naturparks Haßberge.
Archäologische Funde, die bei einer Ausgrabung am Tränkberg gemacht wurden, belegen, dass in Haßfurt im 4. und 5. Jh. n. Chr. eine germanische Befestigungsanlage zur Sicherung der Mainfurt existiert hat. Im Bereich der Flurmarkung „Godelstatt“ (heute Industriegebiet Ost) wiesen Funde völkerwanderungszeitlicher Keramik auf eine Ansiedlung der Thüringer im 5./6. Jh. hin. Diese beiden Plätze gelten in der Überlieferung als Haßfurter Ursiedlungen.
Als Grenzbefestigung zwischen den Bistürmern Würzburg und Bamberg wurde Haßfurt als „Hasefurth“ im Jahr 1230 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, 1235 verlieh der Würzburger Fürstbischof dem Ort die Stadtrechte.
Haßfurt ist reich an Zeugnissen einer über 780-jährigen Geschichte wie z.B. die Ritterkapelle aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, das historische Rathaus aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, die beiden vor 1230 erbauten Tortürme oder die im 15. Jahrhundert errichtete ehemalige fürstbischöfliche Zehntscheune (heute Stadthalle).
Obwohl das Stadtwappen einen Hasen zeigt, stammt der Ortsname vom germanischen Hasufurth (Nebelfurt; Weg durch den Nebel).

Haßfurt is the county seat of the district Haßberge in the Bavarian administrative district of Lower Franconia. It lies on the north bank of the Main River (at river kilometer 355) and on the southwest edge of the Haßberge Nature Park.
Archaeological finds which were made during an excavation at the Tränkberg, prove that in Haßfurt in the 4th and 5th century AD a Germanic fortification to secure the Main ford existed. In the area of the hallmark "Godelstatt" (now industrial area east) found finds of migrant ceramics on a settlement of Thuringia in the 5./6. century. These two places are in the tradition as first settlements.
As a border fortification between the bishoprics of Würzburg and Bamberg Haßfurt was first mentioned in a document as "Hasefurth" in 1230, 1235 awarded the prince-bishop from Würzburg the city rights.
Haßfurt is rich in testimonies of a more than 780-year history, for example the chapel from the 15th century, the historic town hall from the 16th century, the two built before 1230 gate towers or (erected in the 15th century) the former prince-bishop Zehntscheune.
Although the city coat of arms shows a hare, the place name comes from the Germanic “Hasufurth” (way through the fog).
