Geocache Description:

Stiappa sorge sull’antico confine tra granducato di Toscana e ducato di Lucca dove si combatterono numerose guerre.
La pieve di S. Maria Assunta è situata in posizione dominante e ha un forte richiamo all’arte romanica.
Se visiti Stiappa in inverno la troverai quasi deserta, ma in estate si rianima di villeggianti e paesani che rientrano per le vacanze.
Ti piace camminare? Dopo aver trovato la cache e aver passeggiato per le affascinanti vie del paese potresti scendere da Stiappa fino al Mulino del Fontanone, attraverso un percorso chiamato Via dei Mulini. Troverai 4 antichi mulini in pietra del 16° secolo, attivi fino a pochi decenni fa.
In passato i mulini erano molto importanti nell’economia del luogo poichè le pesanti macine di pietra trasformavano le castagne di cui sono ricchi questi boschi in farina.

Stiappa is placed on the ancient border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Lucca, where many wars were fought.
The church of Santa Maria Assunta is located on the top of the village and has an architecture which recalls Romanesque art.
If you visit Stiappa in winter you will find it almost deserted, but during the summer is more lively with local people who are back for their holidays.
Do you like trekking? Once you have found the cache and enjoyed a walk through the enchanting streets of the hamlet, you could walk down from Stiappa to Mulino del Fontanone (Fontanone mill), along a trail called Via dei Mulini (Mills Road). You will find 4 ancient stone mills dating back to 16th century, that worked until a few decades ago.
In the past the mills were very important for the local economy because they transformed chestnuts (which are very common in these woods) into flour.
