Geocache Description:

Alla fine sei giunto a Pontito, il punto più estremo della Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina!
Il paese ha la forma curiosa di un grande ventaglio rovesciato.
Secondo la tradizione prende il suo nome da un ponte qui costruito dall’imperatore romano Tito Augusto. Più probabilmente invece il nome deriva dall’antica chiesa del paese, che era intitolata al patrono San Potito.
Il castello è noto sin dal 9° secolo e sorge presso la sorgente del fiume Pescia.
Al vertice del borgo si trova la chiesa dei SS. Andrea e Lucia con la massiccia torre campanaria di impianto romanico.
La rocca si trovava sopra la chiesa, nel punto più alto del colle, ma ormai ne rimane solo qualche rudere. A proposito della rocca è curioso sapere che gli abitanti del paese anticamente si difendevano dai nemici lanciando su di essi dei grossi massi sferici che ancora oggi sono conservati in gallerie sotterranee scavate all'interno del villaggio.
Passeggiando su e giù per le ripide stradine di Pontito potrai vivere il fascino della sua solitudine e del suo isolamento.
Avrai la sensazione di essere davvero fuori dal mondo e forse parte di una favola!

Finally you have arrived in Pontito, the extreme hamlet of Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina!
The village has the odd shape of a big overturned fan.
According to the tradition, the name of Pontito comes from a bridge built here by the Roman Emperor Tito Augusto. More likely, it takes its name from the ancient church, which was dedicated to the patron saint, San Potito.
The castle, known since the 9th century is placed near the springs of river Pescia. On the top of the village there is the church of Saints Andrea and Lucia, with its Romanesque bell tower.
The fortress was above the church, on the top of the hill, but now only a few ruins remain. About the fortress it is interesting to know that in the past times the inhabitants defended themselves from the enemies throwing on them big spherical boulders, which are still preserved today in large underground tunnels dug in the village.
Walking up and down the steep streets of Pontito you can experience the fascination of its solitude and isolation.
You will feel to be out of this world and maybe part of a fairy tale!
