I wanted to give a brief history and wanted to bring the city of many names, and Derry Girls into a bit of action.
Ferryquay Gate
The site of one of the four original gateways; it overlooked the ferryquay on the River Foyle. This was the gate closed by the Apprentice Boys of Derry in December 1688 against the Jacobite army of James II.
Originally had a drawbridge and Tower; but the gate was replaced by the present day gate in 1865. The headstone on the outside of the gate represents Reverend George Walker, Governor of Derry in 1689. The headstone on the inside of the gate is of Reverend James Gordon.
‘The New Ferry Gate, Londonderry, contracted for with the Corporation by Mr. Matthew McClelland, builder, &c., at a cost of £750, is to be commenced immediately. The new gate will have a main and two side arches. The first will be 17 feet high by 18 feet wide; the latter will have 5 feet of span and 10 feet of height. Both fronts will be finished in finely wrought freestone, with rusticated ashlar quoins. The keystones of the arch will be carved into memoheads, and the structure will be surmounted by a handsome parapet, with freestone balustrading. The design was furnished by the city engineer, Mr. Collins.” The Dublin Builder, June 15 1866.
Derry Girls
Derry Girls is a British sitcom created and written by Lisa McGee. Produced by Britain's Hat Trick Productions, and is set in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s. It premiered on 4 January 2018 on Channel 4, and was renewed for a second series after the airing of its pilot episode. Production of the second series began later that year on 8 October 2018, while the network is in "advanced talks" regarding renewal for a third series. The second series began airing on 5 March 2019.
Well worth a watch.
