We have all heard of Rosa Parks, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, and Susan B. Anthony.  But what about these women that history seems to have forgotten?

 

A - Josephine Pearson

 

B – Biddy Mason

 

C - Emily Roebling

 

D - Mary Fields

 

E - Gertrude Ederle

 

F - Sybil Ludington

 

 

6 – First woman to swim the English Channel.  She beat the men’s record time by over two hours, and got a red roadster from her father.

 

2 – Opposed women’s suffrage. She said voting would be a burden for women and a threat to the South way of life.

 

0 – A freed slave who moved to Montana Territory.  Native Americans called her “White Crow” because she acted like a white women but had black skin. Became the second women and first African American women to work for the U.S Postal Service earning the nickname “Stagecoach”.

 

5 – Rode 25 miles (farther than Paul Revere) from her New York home to warn the country side of the coming British invasion.  Went on to serve as a messenger in the Revolutionary War.

 

4 – Instrumental in completion of the Brooklyn Bridge.  Stepped in as surrogate chief engineer after her husband fell ill.  Later completed her law degree and was active in several social organizations for women’s rights.

 

7 – Walked to California as a slave and gained her freedom in a court case.  Worked as a nurse in the growing city of Los Angeles. Invested her meager earnings in land and became a millionaire philanthropist.
