Geocache Description:

San Quirico è una delle più belle castella della Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina. Collocato sul versante est del Monte Battifolle, è un paese che offre la vista su tutte le valli. La chiesa e il bel campanile non si trovano nella parte più elevata dell'abitato.
L'ampiezza della castella dà l'idea della sua importanza durante il Medioevo, soprattutto per via della sua posizione di confine tra Firenze e Lucca.
Il 14° secolo fu estremamente duro per S. Quirico e per i paesi vicini: a causa di guerre e carestie rimasero soltanto 20 abitanti, tanto che il governo lucchese decise di esentare dalle imposte per un periodo di 10 anni coloro che fossero andati ad abitarci, e in più lo ripopolarono di galeotti colpevoli di colpe minori.
La Chiesa romanica dedicata ai SS. Quirico e Giulitta possiede un importante Crocifisso in legno policromo del 17° secolo e un fonte battesimale in pietra serena del 16° secolo. Vi è poi una preziosa statua raffigurante Cristo morto, conservata in un locale annesso alla chiesa.
San Quirico è famoso per alcune sagre tradizionali: a marzo quella dei Necci (piatto tipico a base di farina di castagne), e a ottobre quella dei funghi fritti.
Se passi di qui la prima domenica di settembre potrai partecipare alla tradizionale festa campestre che si svolge alla Madonna del Tamburino, una chiesetta del 17° secolo situata poco fuori dal paese.

San Quirico is one of the most beautiful castella of Valleriana/Svizzera Pesciatina. It is located on the Eastern side of Monte Battifolle and here you can enjoy a wonderful view on all the valleys.
The church and the beautiful bell tower are not in the highest part of the hamlet. During the Middle Ages San Quirico was very important because of its position on the border between Florence and Lucca.
The 14th century however was extremely tough for San Quirico: because of the wars and the famines, the population fell down to 20 inhabitants. So Lucca government decided to exempt from taxes for 10 years all the people who would have come to live here, and also repopulated the village with prisoners guilty of minor crimes.
The Romanesque Church dedicated to SS. Quirico e Giulitta contains an important 17th century polychrome wooden crucifix and a 16th century baptismal font in serena stone. Furthermore there is a precious statue of dead Christ, preserved in a room attached to the church.
In San Quirico there are some nice traditional festivals: the Necci festival (necci are a typical dish made with chestnut flour) in March, and the fried mushrooms festival in October.
If you visit San Quirico the first Sunday of September, you can take part in a traditional rural festival at Madonna del Tamburino, a small 17th century church just outside the village.
