This cache was one of many firsts! This was our first houseboat trip on Lake Powell. On this trip, we found our first cache in Labyrinth Canyon, and we also left this cache, our first. The night before we left Southern CA for Lake Powell, I was Googling online for campsites, when I stumbled on Geocaching.com. I got hooked. I printed out some candidate caches, grabbed a few cacheable items, and on the way out of town we picked up a GPS. My wife, daughter, son, and I placed this cache after our first night on the lake.
The difficulty level for finding this cache might depend on the water level. We hit the lake with the water level at a 10-year low, about 70 feet below full pool. We had to navigate shallow and narrow fingers with our 36' houseboat. At full pool you might be able to cruise by in your boat and grab it (not quite). We placed it about 40 feet above the "bathtub ring".
I don't know if it exists when the levels are higher, but don't miss the vigorous little stream that bubbles from the dune at the end of the channel. It might not have anything to do with finding the cache; it's just worth checking out.
The original cache contents are:
- 1950s vintage Argus C3 camera (my dad's)
- Lake Arrowhead Village arcade game token
- Snow Summit pin (Sue's)
- Toy dinosaur (Matt's)
- Dutch coins
- Nob Hill Casino $1 chip (a Las Vegas Strip casino near the Flamingo that's been gone 10 years)
- toy Collie (Laura's)
- Zion National Park shot glass
- plastic robot (Matt's)
- eagle pendant made from a 1964 Kennedy half-dollar
- Zion fridge magnet
- Arizona playing cards
(Sorry, but Laura wouldn't part with her Sylvan Family baby bunny.)
The views are great with low water levels. Hope they are equally as good when you arrive. Good luck.

Addendum 8/28/02:
The Geocaching.com monitors raised the Terrain Difficulty to a 5, based on the need for a boat (special equipment). Fair enough. I had originally specified 3.5, assuming that anyone venturing into this neck of the desert would already HAVE a boat. You can extract reality from that. By the way, if you DON'T have a boat then it's a really really BIG 5 (the special equipment being the 100 gallons of water you'll need to carry on your back). --V7L
