①This Flute Cast of Izakibana is a "Japanese Nationally Designated Important Natural Heritage". Please pay attention to protect vulnerable geosites.
②GZ is on the coast. There are times when you can not get close at high tide, so check the tide level in advance.
流痕とは堆積物の底面に残された痕跡の一つです。フルートキャストと呼ばれます。これは、砂や礫を運搬した水流の渦によって水底の泥質堆積物がえぐられてできたくぼみを、そこに運ばれてきた堆積物が埋めることにより形成されたものです。
The flute cast is one of the traces that left on the bottom of the deposit. It is called a flute cast. First of all, the vortices of the water flow carrying sand and gravel create depression at the sediment of the bottom of the water. Next, the depression is buried by the carried on sediment. The flute cast is thus formed.
フルートキャストはこぶのような形をしています。そしてそのこぶは上流側が急で下流側が緩やかな斜面をなしています。したがって、フルートキャストは堆積物がどの方向から流れてきたのかを知るてがかりとなります。(下図を参照ください)
The flute cast is shaped like a hump. And the humps are steep on the upstream side and gentle on the downstream side. Therefore, flute cast will be a key to know from which direction the sediment has flowed. (refer to the Pattern diagram below)

猪崎鼻一帯の地層はかつて海底でした。現在ここで目にする海岸の断崖地層は、今から4,000万年～2,200万年前に海底で発生した大規模な地すべりによって堆積したもので、四万十累層群の日南層群に属する砂岩と泥岩の互層で構成されています。
猪崎鼻では多種多様な堆積構造や生痕化石が見られることから、日本列島の生い立ちに関する古環境や堆積の仕組みを知るうえで大変貴重な場所となっています。
The area around Izakibana was once the seabed. This coastal cliff is deposited by a large landslide that occurred on the sea floor between 40 and 22 million years ago. It was formed of alternating layers of sandstone and mudstone that belong to the Nichinan Group in the Shimanto Supergroup.
A large variety of sedimentary structures and trace fossils can be seen in the Izakibana. Therefore, it is a useful place to learn about the paleoenvironment and the mechanism of sedimentation related to the history of the Japanese archipelago.

Next, observe the part shown by the red line. From which direction do you think the water was flowing as a result on this flute cast?

TASK ２
この場所のフルートキャストは砂岩が泥岩の上に堆積することで生まれています。では、砂岩の下にあった泥岩にはくぼみがある筈です。
しかし、GZ周辺でくぼみがある泥岩を見かけることはほとんどありません。何故でしょうか？あなたの考えを述べてください。
The flute cast of this place was made when sandstone deposits on mudstone. Therefore, there must to be depression in the mudstone that was under the sandstone.
However, it is rare to see mudstone with depressions. Why is that? Please explain your thoughts.
