Geocache Description:

Seal

Franklin County, Missouri is celebrating its bi-centennial this year (2019).   In commemoration of this year long celebration, I will be placing a number of geocaches around the county celebrating this historic event.

The original settlement at Beaufort was located more south of the present day city closer to the Bourbous River.   It was officially established in 1849 when the local post office was created there.  It is said that the community most likely takes its name from Beaufort, South Carolina, which was the native home of the second postmaster, Dr. Pierce Nugent Butler.  The South Carolina town is the county seat of Beaufort County, at the southern tip of the state. Its name was doubtless borrowed from one of the several French towns called "Beaufort" or the "Fair Fortress."   The entire town was moved in 1887 (without changing its name) to its present site when the Rock Island Railroad was extended further West and passed through the small hamlet.

In 1870 there was a major mill in the area belonging to John Noser. It was located down on the Bourbous river so the water could be harnessed to turn the mill wheel for the grinding of grain. The town was also famous as the home of one of only 5 companies in the region at the time that made caskets.  Mr. William Temme ran a business from 1865 until 1906 and made both coffins and wagons.  Surely many of his projects were put to use at the same time many days!  Today, remnants of Beaufort's former glory days can still be seen in the old North Star Bar and Grill, located very close the junction of Highways 50 and 185.  The stories that old building could tell!   Back at the turn of the last century the town of Beaufort even had its own column in the Franklin County Tribune weekly newspaper called, "The Beaufort Briefs".

The listed coordinates will take you to the current day Beaufort post office. To find the location of the final, you must use the last digit of the zip codes of several other of the very small towns, all in Franklin County, just like the city of Beaufort. For example, the zip code for Beaufort is 63013, so the number you need is the last "3".  The commas are used here only as city separators and are NOT used in the final coordinates.  The final is located at:

38.Beaufort, Villa Ridge, New Haven, Grubville, Robertsville
-91.Luebbering, New Haven, Labadie, Berger, Catawissa

This cache is available 24/7.  BYOP.
