Possibly the best views of the Glendassan valley. There are serveral mines in the Glendasan valley. Lead ores were first discovered by Thomas Weaver in 1814 but the main period of mining commenced in 1826 under the Mining Company of Ireland. The main dressing floors were at the Hero Mine and an additional dressing floor was developed at the Luganure mines. Water power was used extensively for dressing and pumping. The dressing floors in Glendasan valley seem to have been abandoned after the levels were driven through the mountainside to the Glendalough valley in 1858 A new phase of mining commenced in 1948 under the Saint Kevin's Mining Company who worked the deeper parts of the Foxrock and Moll Doyle veins from adits at the bottom of the valley. A new dressing plant was built at this time. The works employed up to 75 persons and continued until 1957 There are extensicve surface remains in Glendasan Valley; including the 19th dressing floors at the Hero mine; which has a crusher house, stamps beds, buddles and cobbled dressing floors. The remains of the 20th plant consist of the explosives store and the footprint of the modern processing building. Underground access is limited by large collapses at the adit entrances or badly decomposed granite wallrocks underground. The Cache is hidden close to the entrance of one of the old mines. You MUST NOT cross the fence to reach cache. It is located under a small rock which is beneath a small pointed boulder. Keep an eye on junior GC s in this area Dont forget to leave no trace as you're in the Wicklow National Parks . Lookout for the hard of wild goats in this area, and maybe deer not too far away .. Observe caution if you bring your dog. Clean up after your dog too. 999 / 112 for mountain rescue should you need them 😎
