Geocache Description:

One of Hungary's amazing sight is in Fertõrákos, a quarry which was already known in the Roman era and opened in 1628.

The quarry bites long into the hill, creating large 10-12 meters high halls. In the last 400 years, the easily carvable, nice coloured stone became part of numerous buildings in Sopron and Vienna.
This area was created around 20 million years ago, in the Miocenic era. That time here was sea and its sediment created this limestone mountain.
The quarry's wall shows the periods of geological history of the last millions of years. If we take a closer look of the rock in the quarry we can find the traces of the acient flora and fauna, the so called fossils. The accustic of the halls is amazing. Utilizing this, each summer classical and world music concerts are organized in the quarry.
At the top of the quarry there's a fantastic view to the surrounding area, to Sopron and to the Fertõ lake.

Only five kilometers away there's another interesting place. Although you may heard about the event, but usually noone knows where was the Paneuropean Picnic and where is now the monument.
On 19th August 1989 at 3:20 pm. at this place several hundred citizens of East-Germany broke through the "iron-wall", the border between Austria and Hungary, to step onto free land and to travel to West-Germany. This spectacular mass-escape speeded up the changes and finally led to the demolition of the Berlin Wall.
The Paneuropean Picnic is a memorial, erected to evangelize idea of a borderless, common Europe.

The closeness of these two interesting places was the reason for a Multi-Cache. At the quarry there's a 0,5L plastic bottle containing only the English and Hungarian Geocaching quick tutorial. The coordinates of the cache are written on this tutorial.
The cache is a 26x14cm plastic kitchen-box in the area of the Paneuropean Picnic.

A very good quality road goes from the quarry to the memorial. It was hard to find a good hiding spot for the cache at both places, so before leaving please make sure it's well covered.
