Geocache Description:

The area of the cache is pretty rocky so appropriate footwear would be good. There are allot of places one could hide a cache here. I hope I did not make it to difficult to find, and I don't think that I did. One could start by walking, or driving to a power pole containing a large transformer which serves a LADWP pump. The elevation of the cache is 3914 feet.

On March 7 1863, six persons traveling from the Nevada mining town of Aroura, to Visiala, California were attacked by Indians while crossing the Owens river near here. Durring the fray the attacked party had to cut their horses loose from the wagons. Five of the six were able to catch released horses, and flee the area. Charley Tyler, a black cowboy, attempted to catch a horse for the escape, but the horses eluded him. There is some question as to how Charley died, but there is little doubt that the Indians did him in.The black volcanic outcroping has since been called Charley's Butte. For a complete acount of this event read The Story of Inyo, by P.A. Chalfant.
