San Pedro de Mérida, en la provincia de Badajoz, alberga un gran secreto: la existencia de los restos de una antigua basílica visigoda. Parece que este fue el lugar elegido para esconderse por Don Rodrigo, el último rey godo, después de la batalla de Guadalete en el año 711, al comienzo de la invasión musulmana.
Sobre la basílica se construyó la iglesia parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol, la cual da nombre al pueblo. El edificio es un sitio modesto pero interesante, que se creó aprovechando los restos romanos que aun hoy en día se pueden observar.

San Pedro de Mérida, in the province of Badajoz, holds a great secret: the existence of the remains of an old Visigothic basilica. It seems that it was the place chosen to hide by Don Rodrigo, the last Gothic king, after the battle of Guadalete in 711 AD, at the outset of the Moorish invasion.
The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, after whom the town was called, was built over the basilica. This modest, albeit interesting building, was constructed making the most of Roman remains that can still be seen today.
