Fanno Creek, named after Augustus Fanno, is a 15 mile tributary of the Tualatin river. During the late 1800’s, due to the water source, the land near the tributary became the home of rural farms and logging companies. Populations in the area remained small because inexpensive and reliable access to the watershed was not available. The situation changed between 1903 and 1915 when the Oregon Electric Railway expanded its operations westward from Portland. This expansion reached Tigard in 1910.
With access from Portland becoming less expensive, travel to the areas bordering Fanno Creek became more common. Although the Oregon Electric Railway ended passenger operations in 1933, the railway was a key to the development around Fanno Creek and the city of Tigard.
