Geocache Description:

Grand Island is part of the Hiawatha National Forest. It is located in Lake Superior just off the north shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula about one-half mile from the mainland community of Munising, Michigan. Munising is about 43 miles from Marquette and 55 miles from Manistique.

Grand Island is a wild and scenic place perfect for nature enthusiasts to explore. Less than 10,000 lucky people are allowed to visit this secluded island each year. Spectacular overlooks, pristine sandy beaches, fascinating cultural sites, deep hard woods, and inland lakes make Grand Island an exciting destination.

Walk along sandy beaches and enjoy the refreshing clear water of Lake Superior. Explore the island by hiking, mountain biking or bus tour. Discover the sandstone cliffs with breathtaking vistas of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Nature enthusiasts enjoy camping beneath the star filled northern sky or staying in one of the rustic cabins on the island.

In the late 1980s, a diverse group of citizens and interests envisioned transitioning then privately-owned Grand Island – a lovely green jewel situated in Lake Superior just offshore of Munising, Michigan -- into a public land treasure. May 17, 2015, marks the 25th anniversary of Grand Island National Recreation Area. Congress purchased and designated Grand Island National Recreation Area in recognition of the outstanding features of this Lake Superior gem near Munising, MI.
