Jeder weiß jetzt, dass Tunesien voller atypischer Orte voller Geschichte ist. Leider ist dieses Erbe nicht immer überall erhalten und wir finden Orte in unserer Geschichte oft völlig verlassen.

Aufgrund seiner strategischen Position im Mittelmeerraum ist Djerba durch die Geschichte gegangen, inmitten der Konflikte und Begierden zwischen den rivalisierenden Mächten seit der frühesten Antike: Griechen und Phönizier, Karthago und Rom, Araber und Berber, Türken und Spanier , ... oder sogar zwischen Alliierten und Achsenmächten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Diese Befestigungen sind ungleich erhalten, restauriert und geschätzt.
Bis zum Beginn des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts hatte Djerba 8 Festungen oder Borj: Borj el Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha), Borj Jilij, Borj Mersa Ajim, Borj Terbella, Borj El Kantara, Borj El Kastil, Borj Aghir und Borj El Agreb ( des Skorpions) in der Mitte der Landenge, die Djerba von der Insel Zarzis trennt. Tout le monde sait maintenant que la Tunisie regorge de lieux atypiques remplis d’Histoire. Hélas ce patrimoine n’est pas toujours préservé partout et nous constatons souvent des lieux de notre Histoire totalement abandonnés.
« De nombreuses fortifications entouraient l’île. Construites à différentes époques, elles ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la défense ou le contrôle de l’île. Compte tenu de sa position stratégique en Méditerranée, Djerba a été à travers l’histoire, au coeur des conflits et des convoitises entre les puissances rivales depuis la plus haute Antiquité : Grecs et Phéniciens, Carthage et Rome, Arabes et Berbères, Turcs et espagnols,… voire même entre alliés et force de l’Axe au cours de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Ces fortifications sont inégalement conservées, restaurées et valorisées.
Jusqu’au début du XXe siècle, Djerba possédait 8 fortifications ou borj : Borj el Kébir ( ou Borj Ghazi Mustapha), Borj Jilij, Borj Mersa Ajim, Borj Terbella, Borj El Kantara, Borj El Kastil, Borj Aghir et Borj El Agreb (du scorpion) au milieude l’isthme qui sépare Djerba de l’île de Zarzis. »
