It’s been 8 years since Wes and Nora ventured into a cave with a dead flashlight (link). In the years since then, the two friends drifted apart and found themselves with new homes, new hobbies and new lives. Aside from an occasional “thumbs up” on the other’s social media posts, the two companions no longer kept in touch.
Wes had pretty much forgotten about their teenage adventure until recently when he was cleaning out some old boxes in his garage and came across the old scroll that they had used to decipher some symbols they had found while wandering in the darkness. He recalled how he had panicked when the light first gave out, but then remembered some advice about running his left hand along the wall, continuing to follow the twists and turns until an opening was found. Wes grinned, proud that he had all the knowledge needed to find his way out of a perplexing path.
The memory could not have come at a better time since he had recently learned of a hedge maze a few towns over which co-workers had suggested he check out. When he arrived, a caretaker handed him a map and mentioned something about primary colors, but Wes waved him off and hurried into the labyrinth. He didn’t need any help from an old man with antiquated ideas when he already knew how to guarantee he’d find his way out.
Later in the day, when Wes exited the maze, the groundskeeper asked if he had remembered to sign the log to corroborate his achievement. Wes could only stare stoically at the elderly man — he had no idea what the senior was talking about. Apparently Wes didn’t have all the knowledge needed.
