Geocache Description:

You are looking for a themed micro container within a small-sized outer clip-and-lock box. You must sign the log in the inner container to claim a find, but the outer container has room for very small TBs and trade items. Please replace securely and rehide well and be mindful of local residents both at the first stage and the final; in particular stealth will be required at the final and I'd recommend visiting during daylight hours only. Please take care on the busy roads with geokids and geopets. There is on-street parking near Stage 1 and also near the final which is less than a mile away from Stage 1.

Walter Handford

Walter Handford was born in 1893 in Stealy Street, South Wigston. He lived at 95 Highfield Street. He was a talented musician and goalkeeper for Christ Church. He studied at the Wesleyan School Belvoir Road and was a member of Christ Church Bible class. He played the organ. Before the war he was an eleastic web weaver and on the 1911 census he was a music master at Ashby School. After the war he opened a greengrocer on Belvoir Road. He married Nellie Chambers in 1918 at St John the Baptist Church. He died on 22nd November 1977 in Markfield sanitorium. He was created for the exhibition by Janus Learning.

First 50 Heroes

The Coalville Heroes Series celebrates the first fifty volunteers from our area to take part in the Great War of 1914-18. Each geocache commemorates a real volunteer and describes his activities during the Great War.

For more information on the rest of the First 50 see https://www.gagb.org.uk/first50heroes.php.

There is also a short video (opens in new window) about the 50 heroes.

The GAGB are helping to coordinate this series. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.

Finding the cache

This cache is a simple multi. Stage 1 will take you to the War Memorial in Castle Gresley, and Stage 2 to another memorial plaque with a poem in the woods at White Lady Springs. You will need to collect some information from both of these to solve the final.  It's a short walk from Stage 1 to Stage 2 (look for the finger post to the Nature Reserve close to the roundabout and be sure to keep to the signed footpath) then you will need to relocate to the final location.

A = (How many letters in the poet’s first name are given?) minus 1
B = How many times does the name Smith appears on the memorial?
C = How many words are in the first line (not including the title) of the poem?

D = Which line of the inscription on the plaque (starting from the title) does the word “forgotten” appear in?
E = How many letters in the first name common to soldiers Ashmore, Croucher and Clamp?
F = What is the last digit of the year that the Great War (WW1) ended according to the memorial?

Final located at N52 45.ABC W001 35.DEF
