The James River runs 348 miles from its beginnings in the Appalachian Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. The James River offers a variety of recreational activities ranging from fishing and boating to bird watching and....yeah, geocaching. If you look closely near GZ, you will see signs of how access to the river has changed over time (sign at GZ is in direct opposition of the smaller sign 30' west). Parking nearby is often a challenge as the closest parking, Belle Isle Parking Lot, is typically full with so many enjoying the river.
Here are a few fun facts to ponder while searching for this standard hide:
- Only river in the USofA that offers Class III white water conditions in an urban area
- 8 dams on the river; 6 offer hydroelectric power to their nearby communities
- 2 ferries currently in operation: Scotland-Jamestown (free) and Hatton Ferry near Scottsville ($10, but quite the adventure)
- One of the longest rivers in the US that runs entirely in a single state
- Its watershed, or basin, covers one-fourth of the state
- The fall line drops the river 105 feet over 7 miles
- The James is tidal below the fall line
- The largest fish caught in the James was a 102 pound catfish, just south of Richmond
Enjoy the cache. Enjoy the river.
Leave No Trace. Cache In Trash Out.
