We headed out on a previously unexplored trail that had no caches, the plan was to rectify that. Just as we gathered at the trailhead, someone asked the question if anyone brought anything for flies. That thought hadn't crossed my mind in the least until he mentioned that. No one had brought anything, so with that we headed down the trail.
The trail is in great shape and recently maintained, so we were making good time. Sure there were a couple of small flies occasionally zipping around, but nothing of real concern. After a decent stretch, it was time to start looking for a hiding spot and we found a worthy one. That's when things started to fall off the rails. Now that we were stationary, the flies found us. Luckily, they were not biting, but they were swarming like crazy.
I did manage to get the cache hidden in a good spot right next to the trail, but the general location was not GPS friendly. Usually, after five minutes of averaging, the GPS would have 100% confidence in the coordinates. This time, it was closer to only 70%, but with the flies, I cut bait and called it. Just in case this isn't good enough, I've included an additional spoiler photo to help zero in the search.
We did see one snake today, not a dangerous one, which was somewhat unexpected. Be aware of where you step and what you poke around in while you out. Over the course of our trek, we crossed a number of free flowing streams. Our above normal winter definitely helped with that, but I would expect this hike to be a dry one, so plan accordingly, and bring plenty of water.
You will be looking for a 2x2x1.5 inch tin. There is room for small swag, but you will need to bring your own pen.
