Geocache Description:

18 May 2019, 09:00 - 11:00

Coordinates are for the parking lot near the front gate at Willow River State Park.  Current plan is to remove Buckthorn.

It is not necessary to stay for the entire time, but if you arrive at the start you will know where we are working. If you arrive late check the cache page and I will post a note for where to find us.

What our goal is:

• Create a new winter snowshoe/hiking trail from the nature to the new road in the 100 campground. This will allow us to link trails, so we can make a loop for winter hiking.

Where to start and what to do:

• We will be starting in the 200 campground on the existing snowshoe trail and working our way either to the 100 campground or 300 campground. This will depend on the progress made from other groups that are coming in on Friday. A Park Ranger will guide you on Saturday morning and give you direction. There is flagging you will follow and we ask to cut an approximate 3 foot wide path. The buckthorn or vegetation cut will be dragged or thrown at least 10’ off the trail. Try to cut as low as possible to reduce tripping hazards. If there is down logs or branches please pull those off the trail as well if you are able to.

What will be provided:

* Loppers and a couple of hand saws

* We have some leather gloves and safety glasses if people forget to bring their own

* First aid kit

* Snacks

What to wear:

* Layered work clothes that may be shed if necessary

* Sturdy boots laced tight for uneven terrain

What to bring:

* Work gloves (thicker is better when working with buckthorn)

* Water bottle/snacks/lunch

* Safety glasses are recommended

* Tools, if you wish: hand pruner, loppers, hand saw (labeled with your name)

* Optional: A backpack or a 5-gallon bucket is helpful to carry tools and water

* • Bug/tick repellant

Possible hazards:

* Uneven ground with stumps, holes or logs

* Old fencing, posts, barbed wire, or debris pile(s)

* Wet, slippery, snowy/muddy ground

* Buck-thorns & cutting tools
