First Stage:RS100:Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church / 台灣基督長老教會大稻埕教會

Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church is the most splendid architectural work of 19th century Taiwan.

The design of Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church in Taipei is a combination of the architecture styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This historical landmark is, moreover, a combination of Eastern and Western cultures. The front façade of this magnificent western church building is made of exposed aggregate concrete displaying traditional Taiwanese patterns to present a beautiful blend of Eastern and Western art. As the oldest of the three remaining Presbyterian churches that were built in Taipei during the Japanese era in Taiwan, this building features a very rare design not found in most modern Taiwanese buildings. The chapel’s most peculiar aspect is its lack of a single main entrance. Based on traditional teachings of separation of the sexes, men were required to enter and exit the building through the left side entrance, while women used the right side entrance.

Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church was originally known as Dalongdong Church. It was established by Priest George Leslie Mackay (1844 – 1901) in 1875. During the Sino-French War (1884 – 1885), local citizens attacked the churches and Dalongdong Church was so badly damaged that it was reduced to rubble. It was later rebuilt on Niumoche Street (now Dihua Street) after the first governor of Taiwan, Liu Mingchuan (1836 – 1896) approved funding. The rebuilt church, named Fansi Chapel , was one of the largest churches in Taiwan at the time. In 1915, Li Chunsheng (1838-1924), the founding father of Taiwan’s tea industry, proposed donating a piece of land for the rebuilding of the church. The new building, renamed Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church, Taipei, still stands today. In 2007, a new church building was constructed behind the original; only the chapel’s left and right façades were left intact. The bricks of the front wall were removed and it was rebuilt in its original form a mere six meters forward from its previous position to serve as the entrance to the new church building. In 2002, the old chapel was designated a municipal historic site.

At First Stage, look carefully at the facade and you can see three English letters above the Bull’s-eye window. Corresponding to numbers(i.e. A=1, B=2…), you can get the number (X,Y,Z). Based on these 3 numbers, you can calculate the following coordinates and find the other four levels. In these four levels, according to the photo, you can find the buildings of HAS. Look carefully and find clues to the final stage.

HAS:Taipei Yong-Le Elementary School / 臺北市大同區永樂國民小學

On June 18, 1895, the Office of the Governor's Office was opened in a residential building in Dadaocheng, Taipei, and began to handle Taiwan's educational affairs. In 1895, after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, Taiwan’s Japanese occupation began. Japanese educator Isawa Shūji came to Taiwan to serve as the first academic minister of the Governor's Office. In the two years from 1896 to 1898, 16 "Japanese Language Training Institutes" were set up to enroll students to learn Japanese for free. In July 1896, the school and Tai-Ping Elementary School set up the Taipei Japanese Language Training Institutes at the current site, which was the birthplace of Dadaocheng Education. In 1898, the Japanese Language Training Institutes was abolished and the “Dadaocheng Public School” was established.

In 1909, Yanping North Road was built, and the original campus was divided into two campuses. The East Campus (now the Tai-Ping Elementary School) became the "First Public School" and later renamed the “Tai-ping Public School." In April 1910, the West Campus (now the site of Yong-Le Elementary School) set up a female branch school and established the Dadaocheng Women's Public School (this is the predecessor of Peng-Lai Elementary School). In June 1917, the Peng-Lai Elementary School was completed and the Girls' School was relocated. The original site was changed to the Second Public School (the predecessor of Ri-Xin Elementary School). In September 1920, the new school building was completed and the Second Public School was relocated. In April 1925, the bridge public school was established. In September 1926, it moved to the site of the Da-Qiao Elementary School and resumed the operation of the Second Public School. Therefore, the school is the cradle of public schools such as Peng-Lai, Ri-Xin and Da-Qiao.

HAS:Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple / 大稻埕慈聖宮

Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple, commonly known as the Dadaocheng Mazu (meaning "Mother-Ancestor") Temple, dedicated to the Tianshang Shengmu (meaning "Heavenly Holy Mother"), the guardian of sailors and also known as Mazu or Tianhou (meaning "Empress of Heaven"), is one of the three main temples in Daodaocheng, along with the Fazhu Temple and the Xia Hai City God Temple. "The first door opens to display the beauty of Guanyin Mountain; thousands of ships have navigated over the running waters" is written on the front gate, pointing out the change of its location over the years. Cisheng Temple was originally located at the intersection of Xining North Road and Minsheng West Road back in 1866, across the trading port, with the Bali Guanyin Mountain to its front right, looking onto the bay of the Tamshui River flowing north. In 1910, the Japanese government tore the temple down to re-plot the urban streets. The locals funded the temple relocation to its current address on Yanping North Road, using the original pillars and stones and preserving its appearance since the reconstruction finished in 1914, until today.

HAS:Lee's House / 甘州街李宅

The building was originally a three-floor reinforced brick building built in the 1930s by the grandson’s wife of the Dadaocheng businessman Lee Chun-Sheng. Since the completion of the building, it has been inhabited by grandson’s wife of Lee and his descendants, and Mr. Lee Chun-Sheng himself has not lived in this building.

According to the family veteran, the building was designed and built by German engineers; the architectural style was inferred to belong to the “Art Deco” period of the 1920s. The façade of the building has detailed decoration molding, stud decoration and balcony armrests, and the details of the doors and windows. The roof of the building corner is beautifully decorated with the word "Lee" as the Lee family-sign.
