[ITA] In prossimità del porto di Sciacca, nelle acque antistanti la rupe di San Paolo, si erge Rocca Sant'Elmo: si tratta di un grosso scoglio, quasi isolotto, ridotto nelle attuali forme e dimensioni dopo che da esso, nel 1897, fu cavata la pietra per la costruzione della scogliera a difesa del vecchio porto. A questo scoglio è legato il ricordo di una romantica leggenda che ha per protagonista la normanna Contessa Giulietta, figlia del Gran Conte Ruggero, il liberatore della Sicilia dal dominio arabo.
[ENG] Near the harbor of Sciacca, in the waters in front of St. Paul's the cliff, stands Rocca Sant'Elmo: it is a large rock, almost an islet, reduced in the current shape and dimensions after it was quarried, in 1897, to retrieve the stones need for the protection of the old harbor. This rock is linked to the memory of a romantic legend whose protagonist is the Norman Countess Juliet, the daughter of the Great Count Ruggero who was the liberator of Sicily from the Arab domination.
[ITA] Osservare Rocca Sant'Elmo ci permette anche di vedere da vicino la calcarenite, roccia sedimentaria costituita in prevalenza da granuli di carbonato di calcio (calcare) di dimensioni analoghe a quelle di una sabbia (0,063-2 mm di diametro), legate da una matrice calcarea a grana fine.
Per poter loggare questa Earthcache, devi rispondere alle seguenti domande:
1. Osserva la parete della rupe: come definiresti il materiale che la costituisce (colore, dimensione dei granuli)? E' omogeneo? Secondo te può essere scavato?
2. Osserva le stratificazioni dell'isolotto e quelle della parete della rupe: sono coerenti? Sulla base di questa osservazione, è possibile definire l'isolotto un masso crollato dalla rupe di San Paolo?

[ENG] By observing Rocca Sant'Elmo you will be able to take a closer look to calcarenite, a sedimentary rock made up mainly of granules of calcium carbonate (limestone) similar in size to a sand (0.063-2 mm in diameter), tied up by a fine-grained limestone matrix.
In order to log this Earthcache, you have to answer the following questions:
1. Look at the cliff's wall: how would you define the material it is made of (color, size of the granules)? Is it homogeneous? Do you think it can be excavated?
2. Observe the islet's layers and those of the cliff's wall: are they coherent? Based on this observation, is it possible to say that the islet is a boulder collapsed from St. Paul's cliff?
