The seventeenth event in a series of monthly events taking place in different squares of the Dartmoor 365; the square the event is chosen at random by raffle at each event. The square pulled out for this month is D12 Higher Shilstone. The event will start at around 10am at the given co-ordinates for geo-chat, TB exchanging etc. People are free to come and go as they please. Lala and I will be there until around 11am, but depending on the weather/attendees it may go on for longer.
The focus for this square is Higher Shilstone but due to places to hold an event in that specific spot we have moved the event to elsewhere in the square: Shilstone Tor itself. Higher Shilstone is a cluster of farm buildings set into the hillside just below the open moor. To the original Medieval building a new wing was added in the 17th century, windows were replaced and later extra stabling was built on at right angles. Above the doorway are carved oak leaves and the date 1656. Beside the door is an entrance to the shippon, and beside that are steps to the hay loft. It is a private home and working farm.
Shilstone Tor itself is a short walk from various parking spots and an easy walk to the granite outcrop.
