This series of caches has been placed to take you around the park to some of my favourite spots. This little path takes you to the end of Gunwade Lake and is where we used to slide down the bank in our kayaks (canoe club is on Wednesday evenings). There's a number of small beaches around here for pulling out of the water and having a rest or an explore. Near water so watch the little ones. Tweezers might be needed. 1968 Peterborough was designated a new town and as part of the planning a new park was created. Ferry Meadows is at the heart of Nene Park, which stretches west along the valley of the river Nene from the city centre to Wansford. Ferry Meadows has 500 acres of lakes, woodland, grassland and meadows. Most of the land was originally agricultural and also on the flood plain of the river.
As part of the construction of the roads in and around Peterborough, more than 5,000,000 tonnes of gravel was extracted to form what are now the lakes at Ferry Meadows.
The park is a lovely area for cycling, walking and picnics. It has a range of leisure activities from sailing and pedallos on the lake, to childrens play areas and a mini railway. During the summer there are a number of events hosted at the park and a popular park run at the weekend all year round. There's a visitor centre, toilets and two cafes. Car parking in the park is plentiful (charges apply); there's limited free parking at the Ferry Bridge end of the park. The cache is just off the main path so wheelchair users may need help with retrieval. Stealth is required when the park is busy.
