You are looking for a small container in the Arden Point section of the Hudson Highlands State Park along the blue trail.
The date was August 3, 1780. Benedict Arnold had finagled his way into holding the command of West Point, (Egads! Who Put Him in Charge?) across the river from here. This command also gave him authority over the entire American-controlled Hudson River, from Albany down to the British lines outside of NYC. Little did the Americans know that Arnold was in cahoots with British Major John Andre, head of the British espionage system. Arnold intended to turn over control of West Point to the British. On September 24 of that year, Arnold was waiting at his headquarters in British Col. Beverly Robinson’s former summer house on the east bank of the Hudson for breakfast with George Washington. Instead, Arnold received a message that Major Andre had been captured by the Americans. Arnold immediately hastened to the shore and ordered bargemen to row him downriver to where the British ship HMS Vulture was anchored, fleeing on it to New York City and making his escape. Many thanks to Wikipedia for the details.
