While many people associate Port Dickson with its beautiful beaches, they will be surprised to find that Port Dickson houses the one and only army museum in Malaysia, Muzium Tentera Darat is a major attraction for locals and tourists alike. It is particularly packed on weekends.
Muzium Tentara Darat was officially launched by His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Sirajudin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, the 12th King of Malaysia, on June 28 2005. The main building of this museum was erected in 1935 but it was only converted into a museum in the early 2000s. Therefore, the building itself carries its own history. There are two blocks of buildings housing four galleries each, taking visitors from era to era, from the Malacca Sultanate Era to the British Era, formation of the Malay Regiment, Early Independence Era, et cetera. There is also a big collection of artefacts such as cannons, TUDM A4 Skyhawk, DHC Caribou and “Alloutte” helicopter as well as trains and other vehicles used by the military forces over time. For those adventure seeks, there is also a replica of the underground tunnel in Betong, Thailand, used by members of the Malayan Communist Party (1968), although this one is a lot shorter at 142m in length only.
Admission to this Army Museum is free-of-charge but donations of any amount from visitors are always welcome, to upkeep the museum and its facilities. Photography in Army Museum is allowed, at no cost, but the use of flash is prohibited.
