Geocache Description:

A tribute cache to MrMacman2U and his beloved geodog Meeka who went to the Rainbow Bridge on January 10th, 2019 at thirteen years old.

Meeka was a Whippet/German Shepherd cross.......we think. She was owned and loved by Mrmacman2U who is a "ghost cacher".....which means he rarely logged his found caches on line. My pack and I got extremely close to "the Meeka Dawg" as she was called over years of adventures with her and MM2U, and Mrmacman2U undoubtedly has at least 1000 finds by now! So we decided to place this tribute cache for them in Oakley Corners State Forest......a place where they used to go a lot to hike and mountain bike back in the day.

Meeka was one of those rescue success stories. MM2U got her from the Montrose Dog Shelter just over the border in Pennsylvania in late 2007 when she was about two years old. She had a strong prey-drive and was a bit stubborn......as is typical for a sight-hound......which is likely why she was surrendered to the shelter as she would run after any critters that crossed her path. But under the guidance of her beloved alpha, she became one of the steadiest and most trustworthy dogs who made friends with two leggers and four leggers everywhere she went! And she went a lot of places. Not only were there many geocache adventures, but she was a famous sight running along at the side of MM2U as he rode his bike through Endicott. And many times she would also run along side the car as he drove along! Not to worry though, Meeka was paws down THE most traffic savvy dog this old wolf has ever seen......and I've seen a LOT ;) She would run on the sidewalk and STOP at every corner and wait for MM2U to give the word to go ahead. Seeing this team in action was truly a sight to behold, and affirmed the strength and depth of a bond that can be had with a dog. Mrmacman2U is a copier technician, and so a typical workday would find him inside BOCES or Dupont or any number of places that do not allow dogs.....with Meeka by his side. Or more likely she'd be "making the rounds" visiting the people she knew in their offices and at their workstations as MM2U put out whatever "fire" there was that brought him to the rescue!

Meeka was an example of what every dog can be.....what every dog SHOULD be. She is desperately missed my MM2U.....and by this old wolf. But as she got older and slowed down, I know that it bothered her to not be able to keep up with the pack and go on the adventures that we all used to. I know she is happy and free at the Rainbow Bridge running like the wind and frolicking with the rest of the departed pack who passed on before her.

She passed away quietly at home on a cold winter day at around thirteen years old with no sicknesses or disabilities except that her short life was over. Those who's life burns the brightest are often those who will flicker out soonest, and Meeka shone with the light of a hundred suns while she breathed! And she touched many lives with that fire and zest for life. But now she lives on in the memory of those who knew her and loved her for the amazing dog that she was.......no. PARTNER and companion that she was.

This cache is located in the northern part of Oakley Corners State Forest along the BLUE trail. But although it is only off of the trail about 150 feet, there is a hillside to go down and a small intermittent creek to cross. That usually involves a simple stone-step, but can be swollen in times of heavy rain. For the nicest walk, park at the listed parking and walk the blue trail to GZ. For a shorter walk (and if you have a high clearance vehicle AND the gate is open), you can drive closer and bushwhack in to find the trail to GZ. The round trip distances are about 1.5 miles of trail walking, or about two tenths if you are able to drive and can figure out how to access the trail from the forest roadway :)

There is a small and simple FTF prize, and some good SWAG. PLEASE trade appropriately!
