Geocache Description:

This 800+ year old tree is believed to be the largest Ponderosa Pine in the Bitterroot Valley.  At the time Columbus discovered America, the Alta Pine was already mature and probably measured 40 to 50 inches in diameter.

Local Historians believe made the deep triangular blaze on the trunk to mark one of the trails from Idaho to buffalo country in Montana.  The tree was about 60 inches in diameter when the blaze was cut.

Take a breathtaking drive up the West Fork, past the Painted Rocks Reservoir and come see what happened to this amazing tree!

For your safety, and the preservance of this landmark, please do not go beyond the fence/gaurdrail. the geocache IS NOT behind any fences.

It is, however, a micro in the woods.... so have fun with that
