Geocache Description:

Lake Front Bargain Hunt

For those of you who are fans of HGTV’s Lake Front Bargain Hunt, this one is for you.

Lake Arrowhead is located in an area called Massabesic which means “the place of much water” by The Sokokis Tribe, a local native American Tribe which was part of the Abenaki Indian Nation.

History shows that Meeksombe also known as Captain Sunday was the tribal chief as late as 1664.

As a tribute to our original inhabitants of this area, many of these caches will teach you the Abenaki words for some of the wildlife you may see while paddling these waters.

Team MuddyLoons Lake Arrowhead Paddle Caching Adventure.   With 779 acres, more than 50 back coves and over 43 miles of beautiful shoreline, Lake Arrowhead can’t be beat as a paddle caching destination.  As year-round residents of this great lake and hard-core kayakers, Team MuddyLoon (LooonSong and Sticknthmud) have discovered many great spots over the years on the lake that we are sharing with our fellow Cachers through placement of these Geocaches.  These caches are accessible by canoe or kayak only, a power boat will not be able to reach these caches. Except for a few island caches, all caches are retrievable from your canoe or kayak seat.

Recommendations:

  1. If you attempt to cover all of these caches in a single day be prepared for a long day on the water.  Bring a lunch and snacks, plenty of drinking water and sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  2. PFD. Maine State Law requires PFD’s for all boaters. Must be worn by children 10 and under.
  3. Set a waypoint at your launch location, this is a big lake and many people become lost while out on the water.  The placement of some of these caches is going to get you way off the main lake.
  4. Take your time and enjoy the scenery and sounds of the wild life.
  5. Bring along a litter bag, although Lake Arrowhead is very clean, there are still many that will throw their trash overboard rather than dispose of it properly. (Don’t Get Us Started) As Geocachers with a love of nature we always try to make every caching adventure a Cache In Trash Out Adventure.
  6. Brink your camera, if you leave it at home, you’re going to wish you hadn’t.
  7. Lake Arrowhead Community maintains over 20 beaches for residents of the community. During the summer season each beach is supplied with a Port-A-Potty, should nature call. (Speaking for the residents of the community, we’d rather you use our facilities than the lake.
  8. Bring a pen or pencil and some spare log sheets.  Maintaining a group of caches this size accessible only by paddling can be difficult.
  9. Lake Arrowhead is in a battle to control the Milfoil in the lake but there are 10 other Aquatic Species of invasive plants that are not found in the lake.  Please, clean your canoe or kayak prior to launching and prior to launching into any other waters after leaving our lake to avoid transferring hitchhikers.
