Geocache Description:

Dimitri Gallitzin was born a Russian Prince.  When he spent time in America, he was known by his mother's maiden name, Schmettau, simplified to Smith.

He was the first to make all his theological studies and be ordained in the United States.  After a time, Father Augustine Smith became Father Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin.

A sick call to the McGuire farm brought Father Gallitzin from Maryland.  The McGuires bequeathed 400 acres in trust to Bishop Carroll, and Father Gallitzin was instrumental in building St Michael's log church and the town of Loretto.

On June 6, 2005, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints named Father Gallitzin a Servant of God, the first step on the path toward possible future sainthood.
